Generative Artificial Intelligence for efficient and effective healthcare system – Emirates Health Services, UAE
Dr. Sara Alshaya, Director of Data and Statistics at Emirates Health Services, and Mr. Sooraj Pilankuveedu, Director of Oracle Health, share insights into the Artificial Intelligence initiatives underway at the health system as a result of the strategic collaboration between their Organizations
Emirates Health Services (EHS) manages health and wellness in the UAE by delivering world-class health services. It was established with the aim of enhancing the efficiency of the federal health sector in the country by providing healthcare and treatment services, taking preventive measures, combating epidemics and diseases, and achieving sustainable development of healthcare in the UAE.
There are more than 130 facilities managed by EHS, and the health system serves more than three million patient visits every year. The Data and Statistics Department drives several data-driven transformation and innovation initiatives for EHS. Oracle Health team works hand in hand with EHS to help ensure prompt and accurate data-driven solutions to the requirements of their population.
EHS has been using Oracle Health’s EHR for more than a decade to drive innovations and uses it to pioneer many transformative projects using the latest technology. This includes supporting an AI-driven sustainability program, GenAI pilot, and several machine learning models, all of which are used in supporting our patient satisfaction, creating smarter care, and helping to improve overall health outcomes. UAE was a proven leader in COVID-19 resilience and recovery and our joint innovations to manage the pandemic are the biggest testimony to this relationship.
To keep ourselves abreast of the latest technology in healthcare, we are piloting the use of Generative AI (GenAI) at EHS, to enhance the efficiency of information collection and reporting for faster decision making, smarter data analysis, and to generate enhanced contextual insights from large volumes of complex data. GenAI is a category of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio, and synthetic data. It is revolutionizing healthcare across all related segments – patient care, facility operations, treatment plans, drug discovery, etc.
The Oracle Digital Assistant powered by GenAI is an intelligent assistant that supports the users to query analytics or statistical questions using voice and text commands for real-time insights. A first of its kind in the region, the pilot uses GenAI & Conversational AI capabilities on the actual statistical and analytics healthcare data to transform the way valuable insights are generated from large volumes of health data. It has multi-lingual support, reduces massive manual data analysis efforts, and provides deep data-driven decision support.
As many organizations may be considering the adoption of AI, we recommend aligning the AI strategy with their business goals and strategic objectives. It is unavoidable and fundamental for organizational success. Organizations should be bold to experiment with the latest technology following data security guidelines, work with passionate partners, and always keep evolving.
Finding a strong technology collaborator like Oracle Health is important for the success of big organizations such as EHS. This collaboration has yielded the GenAI pilot project in addition to numerous healthcare transformation programs introduced in the region. These initiatives support EHS in enabling innovative analytics solution to improve the efficiency and quality of national health services in the UAE.
The digital transformation is a daunting process that can require a great amount of technology management, planning, and implementation. The relationship between EHS and Oracle Health team has made it possible through its strong collaboration and solutions.
The journey of this project started with the enablement of an enterprise data and analytics platform in collaboration with Oracle Health. This EHS Intelligence platform provides capabilities to convert large volumes of data into clean, curated data. This rich data set is utilized to create advanced analytics models utilizing artificial intelligence.
A few of our clinical models help identify high-risk characteristics from the EHS population that predispose them to a risk of poor disease control. To further elaborate on the significance of such capabilities, we have identified the financial impact of such preventive interventions by avoiding high resource consumption visits and events.
Our No-Show AI model can predict the possibility of the appointment becoming a ‘no show’ based on several parameters. We have integrated the outcomes of the model within EHR to provide the information seamlessly to the scheduling team in real time.
Building a new AI model, training the model on clean data, and making data available are three big challenges for any healthcare organization. Consistent efforts to drive AI-based innovation will eventually bear fruit.
EHS, had the desire to pioneer the use of AI and apply the latest technology to provide state-of-the-art care to our patients. With this solution, we’ve benefitted from many learnings as we bring AI into action.
