Lurie Children’s: A Destination for Organ Transplantation

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago stands as a global leader in pediatric organ transplantation. With a rich history of performing organ transplants, dating back to 1964, the hospital has consistently delivered exceptional outcomes for its young patients.

A Commitment to Patient-Centered Care

Lurie Children’s regularly performs high volumes of organ transplants, thanks in large part to its collaborative team of pediatric specialists and its proximity to Northwestern Medicine, which facilitates high volumes of liver and kidney donations from living donors. In its most recent fiscal year, Lurie Children’s performed a hospital record of 140 organ transplants, including heart, kidney, stem cell and liver. By combining clinical excellence, innovative research and a compassionate approach, Lurie Children’s ensures that each child receives the highest quality care and support.

A Comprehensive Approach to Transplantation

Lurie Children’s offers a comprehensive range of transplantation services, each with a legacy of success:

  • Heart Transplantation: Lurie Children’s Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation Program has been at the forefront of pediatric cardiac care, performing the state of Illinois’ first heart transplant in 1988. Today, it continues to lead the nation in the number of heart transplants performed annually. Furthermore, long-term survival rates for Lurie Children’s heart transplant patients are above the national average.
  • Kidney Transplantation: The Kidney Transplantation Program has a long history of pioneering work, performing Illinois’ first pediatric kidney transplant in 1964. The program’s experienced team delivers exceptional outcomes and innovative treatments, ensuring access to care for every child.
  • Liver Transplantation: The Liver Transplantation Program, launched by internationally renowned liver surgeon Dr. Riccardo Superina, is one of the largest and most experienced in the U.S. The program specializes in advanced techniques such as split liver and reduced-size liver transplants, expanding the donor pool and improving outcomes for children.
  • Stem Cell Transplantation: The Stem Cell Transplantation Program is one of the largest pediatric programs in the nation, recognized for its quality, outcomes and multidisciplinary approach, along with its use of gene therapy.
