From conception to inception: A signature vision for neonatal care

Innovative design brings space-inspired sleep pods to the care of premature babies

You are not looking at a space station. You are looking at Al-Ahli Hospital’s vision for neonatal intensive care in Doha: a futuristic setting built around the needs of its smallest guests and the professionals who care for them. Al-Ahli Hospital describes the design as one of a kind, exclusive to its own NICU: an original expression of innovation developed by the hospital, for the hospital. At its heart is a signature neonatal service column, conceived in-house and brought to life for the hospital’s new NICU expansion. Its illuminated curves make an immediate impression. The more significant story is the practical engineering behind them.

The idea began with Eng. Jamal Hammad, Al-Ahli Hospital’s Deputy CEO and Director of Projects. His initial hand-drawn concept reimagined how essential services could be arranged around a neonatal incubator, combining a vertical service column with a distinctive curved lighting assembly.

The first lines of an original idea

The concept was refined by the hospital’s engineering and biomedical engineering teams in collaboration with Transforma, an Italian manufacturer based in Venice. This collaborative process took the idea from an initial sketch through to manufacturing and installation in the new neonatal unit.

The result demonstrates the value of in-house expertise: people who understand the care environment helping to shape the equipment and spaces that serve it. Al-Ahli Hospital retains proprietary rights to this signature design.

Purpose Behind Every Curve

gas outlets, electrical outlets, and emergency power outlets, along with mounts for vital signs monitors. The layout accommodates the neonatal incubator, while the curved lighting assembly illuminates the care area around the baby and the staff working alongside it.

This integrated arrangement is designed to keep essential services accessible and support comfortable, efficient working positions for nurses, caregivers and neonatologists. Guest safety, service quality and ease of everyday use are central to the design brief, alongside a welcoming visual identity for a highly technical environment.

According to the hospital, the service column was delivered at approximately one quarter of the cost of a comparable custom wall-mounted NICU bedhead unit. This cost efficiency reflects a focused design approach, with the required service functions built into a single, purposeful structure. For Al-Ahli Hospital, innovation begins with understanding care needs and continues through the people who design, engineer and deliver practical solutions. This signature NICU brings that commitment into view, placing its smallest guests at the centre of an idea made real.
