With more than 1.6 million visits per year, Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the second-largest pediatric hospital in the U.S. What makes Nationwide Children’s Hospital special, however, is the child-centered, family-friendly care we offer and the skill of our faculty and staff. We are one of only 10 hospitals to be named to the U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospital Honor Roll, and we are also top 10 among free-standing children’s hospitals in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). From the rarest conditions to the most common illnesses, Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides customized care that considers the whole child—their needs, goals and what “best outcomes” means to them. We recognize the critical role parents play in care decision-making and treatment success, and we involve families in care planning at every stage.

Ambitious for a Reason

Nationwide Children’s Hospital sets big goals. From driving increasing integration of research into clinical care efforts to our five-year, $3.3 billion commitment to transforming  health outcomes for all children — even those who never pass through our doors — we are on a mission to improve pediatric care across the globe. These ambitious aims are only attainable when the best minds, staff, funding and programs are in place. Thankfully, we have all of those things, with our sights set on even more.

Cultivating the Best People and the Best Programs

We have earned a reputation for seeking out the nation’s best surgeons, clinicians and physician-scientists to develop and lead our innovative, highly specialized programs. When our experts have an idea that could change the face of pediatric medicine, we listen. From basic check-ups to the most complex neurosurgical procedure, we make sure our team has access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. We offer them the support they need to craft new specialty areas, new collaborations and pioneering care. With more than 13,400 employees — more than 3,000 of whom are medical or research staff — we offer a neonatal care network and surgical volumes that are among the largest in the nation. We foster powerhouse teams at every level of the organization, and ensure the resources are in place to facilitate the delivery of advanced care, unsurpassed quality and personalized best outcomes.

As our experienced, caring faculty and staff drive progress in their areas of expertise, the world has taken notice. We have cared for children from all 50 states and more than 50 countries, and referrals are growing for our prestigious specialty focus areas as well as our mainstay programs.

The programs featured here are just a small selection of the many groundbreaking and transformative initiatives underway at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Oncology and Neuro-Oncology Leadership for the United States and the World

From our innovative bone and marrow transplantation services to our comprehensive opportunities for individualized cancer genomics testing, our oncology/hematology experts provide the latest in evidence-based, advanced care. What helps make this possible is our involvement in or leadership of more than 13 national or international consortia dedicated to ending pediatric cancer. As hosts of the CONNECT Consortium and the NEXT Consortium, founded by current or prior Nationwide Children’s Hospital faculty, we offer world-renowned expertise in neuro-oncology care and help connect children quickly to the most appropriate and promising clinical trials.

Neurosurgery That Changes Lives

Since becoming one of the few programs in the U.S. performing selective dorsal rhizotomy for children with spastic cerebral palsy, our neurosurgery program has experienced a steady increase in referrals. This innovative spinal surgery offers the chance for improved mobility, reduced pain and easier caregiving due to relief of lower-limb spasticity. It involves carefully identifying and severing the sensory nerves causing the most tension and often provides permanent spasticity relief. Our expertise in this unique procedure rounds out our comprehensive cerebral palsy care services and offers patients and their families a way forward for lifelong care planning.

Neurology and Gene Therapy Collaboration Drives Progress for Intractable Epilepsy and Neuromuscular Disorders

Our surgeons and genomics experts have advanced the field’s understanding of the root causes — and the potential cures — of treatment-refractory epilepsy. With approximately 70 epilepsy surgical cases completed this year alone, our genomics team is studying a large variety of tissue samples to identify the underlying genetic alterations that may explain seizures.  ZOLGENSMA®, the first FDA-approved gene therapy to treat spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1), continues to show transformative and life-extending effects for children with the progressive neuromuscular disease. This remarkable success, developed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, has paved the way for our nine other gene therapy and 10 cell therapy trials currently underway.

Advanced Care Opportunities for Complex Motility Disorders and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Our IBD Center has achieved one of the nation’s highest steroid-free remission rates and offers a full-spectrum medical and surgical program for children with severe Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Children with complex motility disorders have global leaders at the bedside as well, ensuring they receive the most appropriate and skilled care.

With the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction on the same campus, children with IBD, neuro-gastrointestinal or functional disorders and other complex health concerns related to colorectal or pelvic conditions can receive the most advanced multidisciplinary evaluations and treatment plans — with individualized consideration of quality of life and best outcomes always top of mind. Our Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction program is also one of the most sought after and robust in the world, offering full-spectrum care from behavior modification initiatives to surgery as needed.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Advance Patient Outcomes

Our Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team offers some of the world’s most advanced surgical care for 22q deletion syndrome, peripheral nerve conditions, cleft lip and palate, and reconstruction following burns and other traumatic injuries. By collaborating closely with clinical experts from each subspecialty, our surgeons have developed expertise in complex procedures such as brachial plexus operations, microsurgery, muscle reinnervation and facial reanimation, available at only a handful of U.S. children’s hospitals.

Integrated Research at the Heart of it All

At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, we believe that research — from basic science to multi-institution clinical trials — is essential to forging a future of better outcomes for even the most challenging pediatric diseases. That’s why we prioritize the union of research with clinical care in our faculty recruitment efforts, staff training programs and patient trial outreach efforts. The $134.9 million in research awards to the Abigail Wexner Research Institute in 2021 has empowered our teams to answer the questions that matter to patients and physicians, facilitating our contributions to the advancement of pediatric medicine in all disciplines.
