Liv Hospital Empowers Digital Transformation in Healthcare

3D Imaging And Virtual Reality

“By converting preoperative radiological tests into digital models and matching these models with the patient’s real body in a virtual environment, operation planning and the operation process are more successful”, Liv Hospital Brain and Nerve Surgery Physicians Çağrı Canbolat, MD and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abuzer Güngör, MD explained.

Imaging And Modeling

The detailed planning process is carried out before the operation is critical for the patient’s health and the success of the operation. In this process, advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and CT are used. The MRI imaging method provides detailed images of soft tissues such as the brain, while CT scans reveal bone and other tissues more clearly. For example, with brain tumor operation, MRI scans help physicians determine the location of the tumor in the brain tissue. CT angiography and MRI angiography, on the other hand, play a critical role by providing detailed images of blood vessels, especially in the operations of cerebrovascular diseases.

The high-resolution images provided by these imaging techniques enable the creation of detailed digital models of the patient’s tissues and anatomical structures. These models are specific to the patient’s personal anatomy and offer the physician unique guidance with surgical planning. In this way, a personalized surgical approach can be developed for each patient.

3D Scanning And Matching

The patient’s head structure is transformed into a digital model using 3D scanning technologies. This process allows creating a three-dimensional copy of the patient’s anatomical structure, thus obtaining a model closest to the real structure that will be encountered during the operation. For example, in the case of a head injury, the model obtained by 3D scanning can be matched with the digital model obtained by radiological tests to clearly exhibit the fractured or damaged regions. The matching process ensures an accurate match between the real and digital images and provides a solid basis for our operation planning. Thanks to this integration, difficulties that may be encountered during operation can be predicted and strategies can be planned accordingly.

Virtual Reality And Simulation

Virtual reality (VR) technology welcomes a new era in surgical training and planning. By simulating the matched images in a VR environment, a realistic experience is obtained before the operation. Especially in complex surgical interventions, these simulations offer us the opportunity to gain critical experience before the real operation.

For example, during a brain operation simulation, the procedures we perform in the virtual environment ensure that we are prepared for the difficulties that will be encountered during the real operation.

Thanks to VR simulations, the region where the operation will be performed can be evaluated in three dimensions and various surgical strategies can be tested. These simulations play a major role, especially with the training of young surgeons because they are able to gain experience in a virtual environment before practicing on real patients.

Application In The Operating Room And Augmented Reality

During operation, planned procedures can be performed using 3D models and augmented reality (AR) technology. This technology provides a better understanding of the operation site by placing digital information on the actual anatomical structure of the patient. For example, in a tumor operation, thanks to AR technology, the exact location of the tumor and the surrounding intact tissues can be clearly observed. This ensures complete removal of the tumor and preservation of healthy tissues.

This technological approach allows for less invasive procedures to be performed during operations and therefore accelerates the patient’s recovery process. In addition, it ensures that operations are safer and more effective by minimizing surgical errors. The use of augmented reality technology saves time and cost in surgical processes, while also increasing satisfaction and safety of the patient.

This technological integration in healthcare leads to higher success rates and fewer risk factors before and during operation. This approach, which offers a safer and more effective operation experience for patients and surgeons, has an important place in the future of modern medicine. We believe that with the development and dissemination of these technologies, the revolutionary change in the field of medicine will continue.
