Maximum Safety in Infection Control After Prosthesis Surgery at Acıbadem: A World-Class Approach
Prosthetic surgeries are one of the most significant advancements in modern medicine. These operations enable millions of patients to regain their freedom of movement and live pain-free lives. They are performed on approximately 2.5 million people worldwide every year. However, we at Acıbadem Healthcare Group know that prosthesis surgeries carry a risk of infection like any other surgical procedure. This risk affects 1 to 3 out of every 100 patients and poses a critical threat to patient safety and successful recovery. Acıbadem employs a multidisciplinary approach and the most advanced technology to ensure the highest level of infection control safety after prosthesis surgery, both in Türkiye and internationally.
We Shape Science with International Consensus Meetings
One indicator of Acıbadem’s leadership in this field is the 3rd International Orthopedic Infections Consensus Meeting, which was hosted by the Acıbadem University International Joint Center (IJC) in Istanbul. This event brought together 1,200 specialists in prosthetic surgery and infectious diseases from around the world. During the meeting, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of prosthetic infections were thoroughly discussed based on scientific data.
Prof. Dr. Javad Parvizi, an orthopedic and traumatology specialist from the IJC, mentored the meeting. He has published more than 700 scientific articles in the field of orthopedic surgery. Prof. Parvizi summarized the purpose of the meeting, saying, “A new roadmap was created to prevent infections.” It is believed that the decisions made at this consensus meeting, which addressed approximately 400 questions, will improve the success rate of prosthetic surgery by minimizing the risk of infection and enhancing patients’ quality of life and satisfaction with treatment. Professor Parvizi emphasized that the previous two meetings had been held in the United States and that it was a great success for the third meeting to be held outside the United States for the first time, in Istanbul, Türkiye. The results of this meeting will be published digitally as a scientific reference for experts.
Acıbadem’s Distinctive Approach to Infection Control: Expert Staff and Advanced Technology
At Acıbadem Healthcare Group, we have a comprehensive strategy to minimize the risk of infection during prosthesis surgery and provide quick, effective solutions for any infections that may occur. Our strategy is based on our expert and experienced physician staff.
Prof. Dr. Remzi Tözün emphasizes the importance of appropriate patient selection and risk management in prosthetic surgery. He states that factors such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can increase the risk of infection two to three times. He states that the preoperative conditions of these patients should be optimized and that patients with such risk factors are meticulously evaluated at Acıbadem, where necessary precautions are taken. He also adds that, thanks to developing techniques, prostheses now last up to 30 years and patients recover faster.
Prof. Dr. İbrahim Tuncay pointed out that infectious diseases are an important problem today and stated that even microorganisms that were discussed at the consensus meeting can cause prosthesis infections. He stated that there are at least 25,000 to 30,000 cases of infection after prosthesis surgery worldwide each year and emphasized the importance of factors such as the patient’s chronic diseases, the hospital environment, and the correct implementation of infection control measures. He pointed out that unconscious antibiotic use is one of the biggest risks in developing an infection and warned that unnecessary antibiotic use can mask an infection and lead to antibiotic resistance. At Acıbadem, a responsible, scientifically justified approach to antibiotic use is taken.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Parvizi, a world authority on prosthetic infections, Acıbadem applies the most up-to-date scientific approaches to infection control. His participation in international consensus meetings demonstrates Acıbadem’s global impact in this field.
Success Increases at Acıbadem with Patient-Focused and Process Management
Acıbadem’s success in preventing infections spans from patient selection to post-discharge follow-up and includes intraoperative practices. Preoperative screening, individualized antibiotic protocols, and postoperative follow-up programs reduce the risk of infection based on scientific principles.
However, thanks to the emphasis on patient education, patients can play an active role in managing their health. This approach positively affects short- and long-term results and quality of life.
A Healthy Future with Acıbadem Assurance
