How We Treat “Prostate Cancer” and “Prostate Enlargement” At ACIBADEM

Professor Ali TEKIN

Prostate, a gland in the male urinary system, can be affected by several conditions, with the most common being prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. These diseases are prevalent among men but can be treated effectively, permanently, and safely at hospitals equipped with advanced technology and experienced, skillful surgeons.

At Acıbadem, we provide world-renowned expertise, cutting-edge technologies, a patient-centered approach, and exceptional teamwork to deliver the best care for patients seeking treatment for urological disorders worldwide.

A Precise Solution to Prostate Cancer with Robotic Surgery

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. The primary treatment for prostate cancer is radical prostatectomy, a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the prostate gland.

However, this surgery can be performed using different techniques, including open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches.

At Acıbadem, we prioritize laparoscopic or robotic surgery allowing surgery through small incisions, over the open approach that requires a 12cm incision in the lower abdomen.

This approach offers significant benefits to patients, including faster recovery and a reduced risk of complications, infections, and blood loss.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is a medical technology that enables surgeons to perform operations using robotic arms and attached tools. The surgeon controls these instruments from a computer console within the operating room. This approach offers several advantages including improved visualization, enhanced deftness, and greater precision, affording the surgeon to achieve better outcomes.

Minimizing Risk of Incontinence and Impotence with Robotic Prostate Surgery

Prostate is located deep within the groin, situated between the bladder and the urethra. It is closely surrounded by vessels and nerves responsible for penile erections and urinary control. Consequently, there exists a risk of damage to these functional tissues while removing the cancerous prostate. Here, robotic surgery plays a crucial role in enabling surgeons to perform more precise operations. Many studies show that a robotic-assisted approach to prostate cancer surgery helps 95% of patients maintain urinary control and 80% preserve erectile function.

At Acıbadem, thanks to our urologists’ extensive experience in robotic prostate cancer surgery, we can not only remove the cancer entirely but also minimize the risk of urinary incontinence and impotence.

Today, the robotic surgery system is employed in five different hospitals within the Acıbadem Healthcare Group. Furthermore, at Acıbadem University, there is an official robotic surgery training center that educates surgeons and offers a globally recognized certificate at the completion of training.

Advanced Treatment Options for Prostate Enlargement

Benign prostate hyperplasia, or benign prostate enlargement, is the most common condition affecting the prostate.  Unlike prostate cancer, it is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. An enlarged prostate can narrow the urinary tract and may lead to the inability to urinate or the incomplete emptying of the bladder. However, it is a completely treatable condition, with a variety of effective treatment techniques available.

Modern treatments for prostate enlargement are minimally invasive and performed without incisions. These procedures involve inserting a cystoscope through the urethra to reach the prostate and using a laser to cut away the enlarged tissue. After the enlarged prostate tissue is cut, it is morcellated in the bladder and removed. There are various devices used to perform this procedure, including HoLEP, ThuLEP, and BipoLEP. The main difference between these devices is the type of energy source used. Lasers peel away the obstructing prostate tissue from the prostatic capsule, like peeling an orange.

A recent advancement in treating benign prostate enlargement is the Rezum procedure. In Rezum, water vapour (steam) is applied at several points spaced one centimeter apart by inserting a needle into the prostate through the urethra. This shrinks the prostate over time, allowing the urinary channel to open and improving urine flow. Acıbadem is equipped with all the advanced technologies used to treat enlarged prostate, making it one of the few centers worldwide to offer such a comprehensive range of treatment options.
